| D.F. Tiemann & Co. advertisement from "American Portrait Gallery," a 4-vol. set containing 1853 ads. |
The artist of the advertisement vignette was J.W. Orr, whose name appears in the image's lower right corner. David Tiemann,
a descendant of Julius W. Tiemann (brother to the ex-Mayor), provided this biographical information about the artist from
Fielding's Dictionary of American Painters and Sculptors and Engravers, with Addendum (complied by James F.Carr, who was the
publisher, New York, 1965):
"Orr, J. W., Wood engraver, who was born in Ireland in 1815. He was brought to this country as a child. He studied
engraving on wood in New York and later established the most important engraving business in that section of the country.
He produced the frontispiece for Harper's Illustrated Shakespeare. He died in New York, 1887." (p. 265)
